The Spring Festival, recognised by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage, is a significant celebration in Chinese society. To honor the Year of the Snake, Nina Park is hosting the "Nina Park Spring Festival Fun Fair," aimed at showcasing the charm of traditional Chinese culture to the community and families.

The fair will feature a series of experiential booths and cultural games, as well as a lion dance performance. Guests will experience the joyful atmosphere of the Spring Festival and deepen their understanding and appreciation of Chinese heritage through these interactive activities.

Lion Dance Performance

The lion dance is a traditional Chinese folk art that originated in the Han Dynasty and flourished during the Tang and Song Dynasties. This dynamic performance combines martial arts, music, and dance, with two performers mimicking a lion's movements and expressions to display its strength and vitality. The lion dance often accompanied by the vibrant sounds of drums and gongs to enhance the festive atmosphere.

Location: Nina Park - Amphitheatre
Times: 2:00 PM and 4:30 PM (15 minutes each)

Spring Festival Themed Booth and Workshop

1. Lion Dance Experience Workshop

Join our 20-minute lion dance experience workshop, where participants will learn basic techniques under professional instruction. Discover how performers collaborate to emulate a lion’s movements and expressions. Engage in agile dance, jumps, and tumbles while immersing yourself in the festive atmosphere, enhanced by the lively sounds of drums and gongs.

Free of charge and pre-registration is required. Limited quota, first-come, first-served basis.

2. Couplets Calligraphy Workshop

Crafting couplets is a cherished traditional activity rooted in ancient Chinese customs that aim to dispel evil and invite good fortune. By the Song Dynasty, it evolved into inscribing ink characters on red paper, symbolizing the transition from the old year to the new.

Participants will have the chance to write their own couplets, fosters an appreciation for this traditional art form while expressing heartfelt wishes and festive spirit.

3. Peking Opera Ornament DIY Workshop

In this workshop, a professional tutor will share insights into the history of Peking Opera, the significance of its characters, and the meanings of its masks, providing a comprehensive understanding of this art form. As participants craft their ornaments, they will have the opportunity to express their creativity, resulting in unique decorations for their homes or thoughtful gifts for friends and family.

 

4. Mask Painting Workshop

In ancient celebrations, participants often wore a variety of face masks, particularly those from Peking Opera, which feature distinct character traits, to enhance the lively atmosphere of the New Year festival.

In this workshop, participants will immerse themselves in traditional Chinese culture by creating their own New Year masks, adding to the festive spirit. A professional tutor will cover the origins, styles, and symbolism of Peking Opera face painting, enhancing understanding of the characters' stories. Participants will receive a mask base and learn to use paints and decorative materials to craft their unique creations. These masks serve as both artistic expressions and symbols of traditional culture.

 

5. Bamboo Lantern Creation

In this workshop, participants will have the opportunity to express their creativity by designing their favorite lantern shapes and patterns. Whether as home decor or festive gifts, the handmade bamboo lanterns will carry unique meaning and add a warm atmosphere to every celebration.

 

6. Oracle Word Game

Participants will have the opportunity to learn about one of China’s oldest typeface—oracle. They will gain an in-depth understanding of its unique characters and the stories behind the evolution of the typeface, exploring the connections between form and meaning while uncovering the cultural significance of these ancient writings.

Whether you are a beginner or an enthusiast passionate about Chinese culture, you will enhance your understanding of the origins of Chinese characters in a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere. Through interactive teaching and practical exercises, participants will experience the writing of oracle, appreciating its unique artistic charm.

 

7. Xiaozhuan Blessings

Xiaozhuan, a typeface developed during the Qin Dynasty, features elegant lines and unique structures, making it an essential part of Chinese calligraphy. It not only carries rich cultural connotations but also holds significant importance in the history of Chinese character development.

This event cleverly combines fun with cultural knowledge, allowing participants to enjoy the thrill of guessing while gaining a deeper understanding of the distinctive features and historical evolution of Xiaozhuan. Each time a blessing phrase is successfully guessed, participants not only experience a sense of accomplishment but also have the chance to win small prizes, adding to the overall enjoyment of the activity.

  • The " Nina Park Spring Festival Fun Fair " (hereafter "the event") is free to enter. Workshop and game booths have daily participation limits to enhance the experience. To secure a spot, participants can pre-register on the Nina Park website or queue for activity vouchers on-site.
  • The event will be held in the outdoor area of Nina Park. Participants should monitor the weather and dress accordingly.
  • Participants must agree to the event's terms and conditions, adhere to Nina Park's visitor rules, follow special arrangements for inclement weather, and comply with on-site staff instructions. Please help maintain a clean environment by not littering. Nina Park reserves the right to make the final decision on the application procedure, approval, and arrangement. Tour contents may be adjusted under Nina Park operation considerations without prior notice.
